Mass.-Lowell associate head coach Cam Ellsworth will be named the new head coach at Division III Norwich this week, sources tell College Hockey News.

Ellsworth, 38, is a former Michigan Tech goaltender and has been on Norm Bazin’s staff at Lowell since 2011. Prior to joining the Lowell staff, Ellsworth served three years as an assistant with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL.

Ellsworth was primarily responsible for coaching the team’s defense and goaltending at Lowell, and under his leadership both positions have been ranked among the nation’s best over his tenure.

Earlier this offseason, Ellsworth was reportedly offered the head-coaching position at Alaska Anchorage, but he was one of three candidates to turn down the position. Ellsworth also had talks with Merrimack regarding its opening, according to sources, and was also involved in talks with a few programs last year regarding head coach openings, specifically Niagara.

Ellsworth will replace Mike McShane, who was a former head coach at St. Lawrence and Providence before taking the Norwich job in 1996. McShane finished his career ranked ninth all-time in wins with 653, leading Norwich to nine Division III Frozen Fours and and four national championships.
