Massachusetts senior defenseman Ivan Chukarov has left the school to sign a professional contract with the Worcester Railers of the ECHL.
Chukarov was slotted as a seventh defenseman most games this season, though did play in 25 of the team’s 29 games so far. He didn’t play in either of the games this past weekend against Boston College, though he was dressed for Friday’s game.
Chukarov, a 6-foot-3 native of Illinois, had one goal and two assists this season, along with a plus-4 rating. In 128 career games with UMass, Chukarov was 6-19—25.
UMass is currently No. 2 in the Pairwise, and in first place in Hockey East, coming off a sweep of BC. The timing of the move suggests Chukarov did not leave for hockey-related reasons.
Chukarov was drafted in the 7th round in 2015 by the Buffalo Sabres.
