2019 SF Ethan Helwig commits to Merrimack

The Merrimack men’s basketball program received a verbal commitment from 2019 prospect Ethan Helwig, a 6-foot-4 small forward currently playing for Metea Valley High School in Illinois.

Helwig, who is also noted as playing guard in media reports, has averaged 21 points per game this season and recently became the first Metea player in program history to hit 1,000 career points. Scott Burgess of Prep Hoops Illinois reported that Merrimack had an initial scholarship offer last July.

“Ethan Helwig had a phenomenal July for the Illinois Stars,” Burgess wrote. “It was our first time extensively evaluating him and we came away very impressed with the 6’4” Metea Valley wing.  He is a long and wiry wing that can score effectively at all three levels. Shot it lights out in multiple games.  Quick and efficient stroke that he drilled at a high rate especially off the catch.  Good athlete that likes to attack the hoop especially in transition where he finishes well around the cup. D1 prospect.”

Burgess also reported that Eastern Illinois and Holy Cross were on Helwig.
