Derring Named NEC Rookie of the Week

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After posting a career week that contributed to a pair of Northeast Conference victories for the Merrimack College men’s basketball team, freshman Mykel Derring was named NEC Rookie of the Week.

Derring displayed superb shooting, making seven 3-pointers to help Merrimack to a 2-0 week in NEC play. Derring ranked second on the team in scoring and hit the most triples on the team, connecting on 41.2 percent of his triple attempts.  Derring enjoyed a career performance in Merrimack’s win over CCSU, scoring a career-high 12 points on a career-best four 3-pointers made. He has been prolific from deep in NEC play, hitting a team-best eight triples in league contests, which ranks among the top-10 in the NEC, as well.

Through four league contests, Derring is averaging 6.5 points per game off the bench while shooting 38.1 percent from beyond the arc. He has scored in double figures in each of his last two games, and has been Merrimack’s top bench scorer across NEC action.

Derring and the Warriors return to action this Wednesday when Merrimack hosts Bryant University at 7 p.m. from Hammel Court.
