NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior guard Gelvis Solano (Harlem, N.Y.) of the Merrimack College men’s basketball team continues to reel in the accolades following his spectacular third season for the Warriors as Solano was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Division II All-District First Team out of the East Region, as announced by the NABC yesterday evening.
Solano adds all-district honors after he was already named to the Daktronics All-Region Second Team and the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team squads. The Harlem native put forth his best effort so far in a Merrimack uniform this past season, becoming the 40thplayer in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the fourth game of the season. He ended his third campaign ranking 12th on the all-time scoring list with 1,560 career points. He is on pace to become just the sixth player in program history to score 2,000 points and the 16th to reel in at least 500 rebounds.
He concluded the year averaging over 23 points per game, which clinched the regular-season scoring title in the Northeast-10 Conference and was one of the top scorers in the region. He also led the team in steals per game (2.8), while ranking second in rebounds per game (6.0) and assists per game (3.8).
Solano put forth a particularly memorable game in January at Saint Rose, when he scored a career-high 44 points. That tally marked the position for a member of the Navy and Gold in 13 years. He scored in double figures in all but one game, including the final 10 contests of the season, and notched at least 20 points in 17 games.
For his efforts, the Harlem native was one of six players named to the all-conference first team back in February. He became the first Warriors to earn a spot on the first team since Darrin Mency received that recognition during the 2010-11 campaign. Solano was one of four student athletes from the NE-10 honored as all-district selections.
The Navy and Gold concluded the 2014-15 season with a 16-12 record, collecting a postseason victory for the first time in five years.
