Merrimack Picked Sixth in NE-10 MBB Poll

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men’s basketball team was picked in to finish in sixth place in the Northeast Division, according to the 2014-15 Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the conference offices this morning.

Last season, the Warriors finished with a record of 9-17 (7-14 NE-10). The Navy and Gold did not qualify for the NE-10 Championship.

“Once again, we expect to face some of the toughest competition in the country by taking on our Northeast-10 foes,” said head coach Bert Hammel. “We hope to improve on where we were selected in the preseason and look forward to see how our team competes against the other programs across the league.”

In the Northeast Division, Saint Anselm narrowly edged out Saint Michael’s for the honor of preseason favorites. The Hawks totaled 94 points with seven first-place votes, while the Purple Knights finished with 92 points and eight first-place votes.

Bentley (79) and Southern New Hampshire (64) landed in third and fourth place, respectively, in the poll. Franklin Pierce was pegged to finish right in front of Merrimack in fifth place (54). Rounding out the Northeast Division, in seventh and eighth place, were Stonehill (30) and Assumption (28).

Southern Connecticut, the defending conference champions, received 14 first-place votes to lead the projections in the Southwest Division. New Haven (78) was tabbed to finish second, garnering one first-place tally.

Saint Rose (50), Le Moyne (49) and Pace (40) were picked to land in third, fourth and fifth. The last two spots in the division belonged to Adelphi (35) and American International (27).

The Navy and Gold begin the 2014-15 season against Holy Family University on Friday, Nov. 14, as part of the Bentley Tip-Off Classic.
