Limestone Edges Merrimack in 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship Game

FOXBORO, Mass. — Limestone defeated Merrimack, 11-9, in the NCAA Division II National Championship game Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, giving the Saints their third national title in the last four years.

Merrimack was searching for its first championship, while also appearing in its first championship game.

Merrimack had a 5-4 lead at halftime behind a run of four-straight goals late in the first quarter and into the second quarter. However, Limestone would go on to score seven of the game’s next eight goals, taking a 9-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors pushed back with a pair of goals early in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 9-8, both on man-up opportunities, but the Saints would find the net twice more in the next five minutes to extend their lead to 11-8 with just more than six minutes to play.
