Merrimack cruises past UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. – The Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team ran out to an 11-3 lead at the half, before they knocked off UMass Lowell by a 16-8 final Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.

The Warriors dominated the opening 30 minutes with a 4-0 and 5-0 run to blow past the hosts. Drew Hailey had fireworks early on, as the junior tallied a hat trick in the opening quarter. Tommy Rooney also had a big performance, as he led all scorers with six points on four goals and two helpers. Christian Thomas also finished with a hat trick and had four total points on the day.

Rapid Recap

    • Hailey and the Warrior offense clicked early, as he netted his first of the day just over four minutes in, then Jack Rooney snuck inside 35 seconds later to get Merrimack off to a hot start.
    • Lowell settled the game down momentarily at the 7:21 mark with a goal to cut its deficit in half, but it was all Warriors to close the opening 15 minutes.
    • Hailey built momentum for the visitors not long after when he went on a personal 2-0 run in the span of two minutes to push the lead to four. Then, with just seven seconds on the clock, Glover ripped one into the net to send the Warrior sideline into a frenzy.
    • The River Hawks tried to settle the tide again to begin the second quarter with a quick goal, but the Warriors all but put away the game after that.
    • Just 30 seconds after the Lowell goal, Aiden Glover put his name on the scoresheet for the first time in his collegiate career with a beauty of a finish. He took a long range shot that hit pipe, but he found his own rebound and deposited it home.
    • Merrimack rifled in four straight goals after that on a pair from Christian Thomas and one apiece from each Rooney brother and ended the first half with an eight-goal advantage.
    • Tommy Rooney and Hailey found the back of the net early in the third quarter to essentially put the game away at 13-3.
    • Throughout the rest of the third, Thomas completed his hat trick, Max Morrill netted his first of the season and Tommy Rooney added a man-down tally.
    • Lowell scored a trio in the fourth, but Merrimack still took home an eight-goal victory.

Notes and Numbers

    • The Rooney brothers combined for nine points, while the Glover family ended with four to pace the Warrior offense.
    • Karl Sutter had a tremendous afternoon at the face-off X. He went 14-for-23 and grabbed five ground balls to lead the team.
    • Christian Glover’s big day included three points, three caused turnovers and three ground balls for the long stick.
    • Sean Black had a pair of assists to up his team-leading total to seven.
    • Henry Vogt made his first career start between the pipes and turned aside eight of the 13 shots that came on cage. Andrew Jenet played the fourth quarter and made a trio of stops.
