The Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team, ranked fourth nationally in the preseason USILA Coaches’ Poll, has been picked to finish third in the Northeast-10 Conference standings, as the league unveiled its 2016 Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Thursday morning.
The Warriors, who are coming off a historic 2015 campaign that included the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory before coming within an overtime goal of reaching the national championship round, finished last spring with a 13-3 overall record, which was one win shy of the school single-season record. Merrimack finished last year ranked second in the conference standings, going 10-1 in league play (12-1 overall) over the course of the regular season before its impressive postseason run.
Le Moyne once again who led the 12-team poll, as the Dolphins garnered eight first-place votes and 118 points to edge two-time defending league champion Adelphi, who totaled 111 points and the other four first-place votes.
After third-place Merrimack was Pace (89 points), Bentley (71) and Franklin Pierce (67) to round out the top-six squads. Assumption ranked seventh with 55 points, while Saint Michael’s (51), Southern New Hampshire (48) and Saint Anselm (35) rounded out the top-10.
The remaining two teams were Saint Rose (32 points) and American International (11), who were slotted 11th and 12th, respectively, to conclude the rankings.
The 2016 campaign begins next Saturday, Feb. 20, at Martone-Mejail Field, when the Warriors host East Coast Conference (ECC) member and third-ranked LIU Post in a huge non-conference clash to start the season. First whistle is set for 12 p.m.
