After impressive performances that helped the fourth-ranked Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team pick up an important, 18-14 victory against conference and regional rival Adelphi on Saturday, junior attack Max Allen (West Caldwell, N.J.) and freshman attack Michael O’Connell (Sudbury, Mass.) have been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday.
For Allen, the honor is the third of his career and the second this season after previously being named NE-10 Player of the Week back on March 7; O’Connell, meanwhile, takes home his first-ever league weekly honor after his best game yet as a Warrior.
Allen led all Warriors with seven points (4g, 3a) to tie his career-high in Saturday’s victory. He scored two of the team’s four man-up goals and assisted on three others. O’Connell, meanwhile, went off for a career-high five-goal outing and none were more important than the three he scored in the third quarter to help build the Warriors’ lead to 10. The Sudbury, Massachusetts, native had never scored more than two goals in the five previous games he had appeared in.
On the season, Allen now stands at 37 points on the season to lead all Warriors. He ranks 14th nationally in points per game (4.63), 13th in goals per game (3.13) and 34th in assists per game (1.5). O’Connell, meanwhile, has seven goals in his last two games and upped his season scoring line to 11-2—13 in six games, the most among all rookies on the team.
Allen, O’Connell and the rest of the Warriors will have a quick turnaround before continuing league play with a short trip to Waltham, where the Warriors will meet Bentley University for a midweek clash on Wednesday (April 6). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
