Rooney scores four in debut, but Merrimack’s comeback falls short

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College men’s lacrosse team battled late to tie Boston University, but a Terrier run was the difference in a 15-12 loss Saturday afternoon at Duane Stadium.  

Tommy Rooney topped the Warriors with four goals in his Merrimack debut and Sean Black chipped in with four assists. Christian Thomas also netted a hat trick to begin his senior campaign.

Rapid Recap

  • Rooney got the Warrior offense started six and a half minutes in when he turned a corner and fired home a turnaround shot past Terrier goalie, Matt Garber. 
  • The Terriers turned the tides after and netted two straight to take the lead into the latter stages of the quarter.
  • In the dying moments of the first, Christian Glover sparked the Warriors when the defender had a long-range bomb of a goal to deadlock the teams after 15 minutes. 
  • Merrimack kept momentum on its side, as Rooney tallied his second of the afternoon, then Christian Thomas had his first goal of the season to stake the Warriors to a 4-2 lead with 10:10 to play in the half.
  • Boston University had a run of its own to close the opening half hour, as it went on a 5-0 run, which was capped by three straight from Timmy Ley.
  • A refocused Warrior team came out on fire after the intermission. Rooney had the hot hand for the opening three minutes, as he ripped home two straight, including one with the man-up. 
  • Jack Rooney put his name on the scoresheet a couple minutes later, when he beat his defender to the spot off to the right of the cage for his first tally in a Warrior jersey.
  • In a game of runs, the visitors from Beantown rifled home the next four to claim an 11-7 advantage after three quarters.
  • Merrimack did not go away in the fourth, as Thomas started the late charge. He went on a personal 2-0 run in the opening three minutes, capped by a nifty fake into a falling shot past Garber. 
  • The Terries answered to regain their three-goal lead, but Merrimack caught fire once again to even the score. Drew Hailey and Jack Rooney scored just over a minute apart, then Nicholas Perez-Blanco blazed one home with 3:35 to play to deadlock the teams at 12. 
  • Boston University regained the lead just seven seconds after Perez-Blanco’s goal, then added two more late to sneak out the road victory.

Notes and Numbers

  • Glover’s goal was the fourth of his career.
  • Thomas picked up a team-high seven ground balls.
  • Perez-Blanco’s big afternoon included a game-high three caused turnovers.
  • Andrew Jenet made his Merrimack debut in the net and played the whole game.
