NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior Miguel Belfort(Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) of the Merrimack College men’s tennis team won the Blue Draw on the second day of the Merrimack Doubles Invitational as the Warriors hosted Assumption, New York Institute of Technology and Southern New Hampshire for a doubles tournament over the weekend.
After not playing a match together during the 2014-15 campaign, the duo debuted over the weekend by winning four of six matches. In the quarterfinals, Belfort and Majewski defeated the combination of Nicolas Auruccio and Tomas Lieb from NYIT (8-6) before advancing to the semifinals where they took down Ryan Foster and Chris Waung from Assumption (8-1).
Rafal Charkiewicz and Rares Ispas awaited the Warriors in the final, a pairing who had won the Yellow Draw on the first day of the tournament. A back-and-forth match was squared through 16 games, sending the contest to a tiebreak. Belfort and Majewski prevailed, 7-4, to come away with the victory to win the draw.
Junior Steven Francis (Perth, Australia) and sophomore Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) returned as a pairing after competing at No. 1 doubles last spring. The combination won once in four matches over the weekend.
Sophomore Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) played with two different partners over the weekend, including sophomore Thomas O’Brien (Lancaster, Pa.) and freshman Tyler Clontz(Naples, Fla.). Clontz picked up his first career win while playing with Vega.
Clontz joined fellow freshman Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) in making their Merrimack debuts. The two rookies played as pairing in the Yellow Draw on the second day of the tournament.
The Navy and Gold continue their fall slate this weekend when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the ITA Regional Championships, beginning on Saturday at 9 a.m.
