Senior Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) of the Merrimack College men’s tennis team has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men’s At-Large First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of Ameirca (CoSIDA) this afternoon.
Bellino represented Merrimack from District 1, which includes nominees from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), the East Coast Conference (ECC) and the Northeast-10 Conference. The Amesbury native’s first-team recognition means that Bellino will be in the running to be named a Capital One Academic All-American. Those honorees will be selected later this month.
The men’s tennis star becomes the fourth student-athlete at Merrimack in 2014-15 to receive academic all-district recognition from CoSIDA. Sophomore Megan Gada (Bozrah, Conn.) and junior Jenna Savi (Dedham, Mass.) of the women’s soccer squad, as well as senior Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.), were named to their respective all-district teams last fall.
Bellino finished the year with a 3.97 cumulative GPA, en route to his selection as the Rafferty Award recipient. The Rafferty honors Merrimack’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and recognizes athletic and academic acheivement, as well as leadership within the college community. Bellino was also named Merrimack’s nominee for the NE-10’s Male Outstanding Scholar Athlete of the Year earlier this week.
On the court, Merrimack’s senior captain finished the regular season with a 9-0 mark in NE-10 singles, while also winning eight of 10 doubles matches in conference play. He landed on the all-league first team at No. 4 singles and the all-conference second squad at No. 2 doubles. The lone graduating member on the Warriors, Bellino picked up his 100th career win on Senior Day against Stonehill.
