Braga Earns Second NE10 Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honor

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – For the second time in just three meets this season, senior captain John Braga (North Reading, Mass.) of the Merrimack College men’s track & field team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Field Athlete of the Week after a stellar performance at the Harvard Multi Meet this past weekend.

This award marks the fourth Field Athlete of the Week honor of the captain’s career and is already the second of his senior campaign, earning the distinction in the first week of the season after an impressive outing at the UMass Boston Indoor Open. This is also the third Field Athlete of the Week honor for the Warriors in three weeks of competition this season, as sophomore Michael Cuesta (South Portland, Maine) garnered the award after Merrimack’s second meet.

The two-time All-American takes home the award after punching his ticket for a return to the NCAA Indoor Championships, posting an automatic-qualifying score of 5343 points and winning the heptathlon at Harvard, setting a new school record. Braga won five of the seven events in the heptathlon on his way to a victory, including with a school record 4.25m pole vault that ranks second in the NE10 this season. The 5343-point performance is also the third best in Division II this season.

Braga and the Warriors return to action in Maine on Saturday when they compete at the Bowdoin Invitational.
