Freshman Michael Cuesta(South Portland, Maine) of the Merrimack College men’s track and field team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Track & Field Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league offices Monday afternoon.
The freshman found success in both track and field events for Merrimack this past Saturday in just his second meet as a Warrior. For the track portion, Cuesta was the top finisher for the Navy and Gold in the 60m, finishing in fourth with a personal-best time of 7.14. That time was just 0.01 seconds shy of landing on the school record board in a tie for fifth.
The South Portland, Maine native also excelled in two different field events at the Jay Carisella Invitational, hosted by Northeastern and featuring many Division I teams. Cuesta placed fourth in the long jump with a personal-best 6.41m jump, a distance that ranks fourth on the school record board. Two of the three athletes Cuesta finished behind in the event were teammates, as junior John Braga (North Reading, Mass.) finished in first (7.17m) and sophomore Kenny Clarke (Oakland, N.J.) finished first and second, respectively.
The rookie also had a superb showing in the triple jump, finishing second in the event with a personal-best 13.63m jump. That distance would also set a new school record, breaking the one set back in 2011 by nearly a foot.
Cuesta and the rest of the Warriors are on the holiday break until 2016, when they will compete again at the Harvard Multi-Meet on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16.
