Merrimack College has received a verbal commitment from ’94 defenseman Marc Biega.
Biega is the younger brother of Alex, Danny and Michael Biega, who all starred at Harvard University.
This season with the Coquitlam Express of the British Columbia Hockey League, the 6-foot-1 Quebec native has 34 points in 53 games (16 goals, 18 assists). He’s a teammate of fellow Merrimack recruit Jace Hennig.
“I was always an offensive player,” Biega told the Tri City News last month. “At the beginning of the year it wasn’t really going well offensively but now since I’m burying it and getting a lot of points it’s going real well.
“I don’t compare myself to any NHL players. I just try to do my best and be offensive and help the team out,” he said
Added Coquitlam head coach Barry Wolff: “He’s so smart, he moves the puck in the right places at the right times.”
In 2010, in a profile of Biega’s three older brothers at Harvard, they were asked who the most talented brother was. Michael responded, “Can we include my little brother, too? Skillwise, I’d probably say my younger brother [Marc]. He plays very similar to me, has very good hands, and he’s doing really well right now. He probably has a harder shot than all of us.”
Biega is slated to arrive on Merrimack’s campus in 2014.
