Alex Velischek Leaves Providence

Providence defenseman Alex Velischek has decided to leave school and play for Sioux City of the USHL.

The 6-foot Velischek, who turned 20 on Friday, was drafted in the fifth round by Pittsburgh in 2009. He’s the son of Randy Velischek, a 10-year NHL defenseman who also played at Providence.

Alex Velischek had one goal and 11 assists for Providence last season. This year, Velischek played just nine games for the Friars while struggling with a high ankle sprain.

No word on whether Velischek intends to transfer to another NCAA team. He is expected to join Sioux City after the Christmas break.
