Bazin Q&A: Lowell head coach talks his team’s strengths ahead of playoff series

UMass Lowell head coach Norm Bazin took part in a Hockey East media teleconference earlier this week. The following is a partial transcript of that call.

Opening comments …

Bazin: “We’re excited to be heading into the second season. We’ve had an up-and-down season in the regular season, and I think parity in Hockey East has been as strong as it’s been in the last seven years. We’ve felt that way. We’ve had some highlighted games and a few disappointments along the way. That just makes you stronger in the second season. We’re looking forward to starting fresh and facing a good opponent in Merrimack.”

On what Lowell’s strengths have been this season …

Bazin: “I’d point to our depth. Our depth has been our rock this year. I feel we’ve got a D corps. that is not necessarily All-Stars, but we’re strong and heavy down low lead by three seniors. Up front we have a whole bunch of guys lumped in with about the same point totals, and that’s fine with us. We have a lot of guys finding their way in Hockey East, realizing how tough the conference is. Lohin and Dmowski are All Stars down the road in Hockey East, the way that they play and approach the game.”

On the play of goaltender Christoffer Hernberg …

Bazin: “Chris was able to pick up and take off. He’s been one of the more pleasant stories in Hockey East. He played a couple of games last year in a backup role, but he didn’t complain or say ‘boo.’ He sat there and waited for his turn and he’s made the most of his opportunity. He’s won nine games in Hockey East, 14 overall, and he’s made the most of his opportunity and had a really good season for us.”
