BREAKING: UAH hockey could be saved in 11th hour

Following a meeting with Alabama-Huntsville alumni, led by Nathan Bowen, the school released a statement late last night that seemingly reverses the decision made by outgoing president Malcolm Portera to disband the its Division 1 hockey team.

Robert Altenkirch, the new president, agreed to meet with supporters last night after previously promising a complete review of the athletic department budget. Following that meeting, a statement was released that said the school would work with supporters to find an avenue to keep the Chargers hockey program in Division 1.

The statement, however, did neglect to make a promise that the program would remain Division 1.

“Members of The University of Alabama in Huntsville administration met this evening with hockey supporters, following discussions with Chancellor Malcolm Portera, and came to a consensus to work closely together to pursue institutional and community support to continue UAH hockey at the Division I level,” the school said in the statement.

“Several scenarios were discussed to ensure recurring support is in place, and the two groups will continue to meet in the coming days to finalize a workable plan.”
