Former Merrimack College goaltender Joe Cannata has signed a contract with IF Björklöven for the 2019-20 season.
Cannata, 29, spent this past season with the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) while being under an NHL contract with the Colorado Avalanche. Cannata had been under an NHL deal since he came out of Merrimack in 2012, playing first with the Vancouver Canucks organization (2012-16) and then spending one year with the Washington Capitals (2017) and the last two seasons with the Colorado Avalanche.
In 40 games this past season with the Grizzlies, Cannata posted a 2.88 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. Last season, Cannata had the best save percentage in the ECHL (.931) and led the Grizzlies to the ECHL’s Kelly Cup championship.
“It feels very exciting to come to Umeå and Björklöven,” Cannata said. “I have heard very good things about Umeå from Andrew Raycroft, who played in Björklöven a few seasons ago. He works with my goalkeeper coach and he only has good things to say about the fans, the city and the organization.”
Cannata played four seasons at Merrimack (2008-12) and started 122 games between the pipes.
