Hampus Gustafsson has agreed to join IF Troja-Ljungby, his hometown team, on what sounds like some sort of tryout offer according to the team’s website. Ljungby is in HockeyEttan, which is the third tier of professional hockey in Sweden. Last season, Gustafsson played in the SHL, the country’s top division.
According to a translated press release, it sounds like Gustafsson was looking for other European options but COVID-19 was making finding a team problematic, so he will join IF Troja-Ljungby through December, and again, from a translated release it sounds like some sort of tryout contract where he may not be paid.
“Since we do not have a budget to take on Hampus, we are extremely grateful that Hampus can imagine playing with us,” said team director Daniel Håkansson. “The agreement is valid until the basic series is completed on December 16th, then we will see. Since he has always trained with us, we know what we get and Hampus is already part of the gang.”
Gustafsson played for IF Troja-Ljungby’s J18 and J20 teams prior to coming to the U.S., where he played in the NAHL and ultimately committed to the Warriors.
