Hockey East Standingsology: Using KRACH to project the final standings (2/20)

We’re entering the last weekend of the regular season, and as we’ve done for the last few weeks, we’ll use the KRACH to project the final point totals for each Hockey East team.

Using the KRACH, which is a mathematical ranking system that gives us a theoretical winning percentage, we can project the number of points earned from now until the end of the regular season, which gives us a projected final standings and playoff matchups.

The KRACH projects that Boston College will win the regular-season championship. Northeastern is projected to finish in second place, with Providence and Boston University locking down the final home-ice quarterfinal spots.

It gets interesting in the first-round. Merrimack, which has been projected to finish in last place for the last several weeks, is now projected to finish 10th by nature of winning a tie-breaker with UNH. That means the Warriors are projected to go to UMass Lowell in a 7 vs. 10 matchup, because UConn is projected to jump Lowell this weekend. Merrimack and UMass Lowell, per the KRACH, are expected to split this weekend.

Current first-round playoff matchups are projected as:

6. UConn vs. 11. UNH
7. UMass Lowell vs. 10. Merrimack
8. Vermont vs. 9. UMass
