Kovacevic Takes Second TMR Award, Named Best Defenseman

Merrimack freshman defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic was named the 2017 TMR Best Defenseman Award winner, as voted on by readers of The Mack Report.

Kovacevic previously won the 2017 TMR Rookie of the Year Award.

Kovacevic becomes the first freshman to win TMR Best Defenseman since Karl Stollery in 2008. That began a run of four straight seasons where Stollery won the award, spanning his entire NCAA career.

Kovacevic appeared in 36 of Merrimack’s 37 games as a rookie, only missing the first game of the season, finishing with three goals and 16 assists for 19 points. Kovacevic’s point total led all defensemen and he was a fixture on both the power play and penalty kill.

A native of Grimsby, Ontario, the 6-foot-4 defenseman is eligible for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
