Merrimack head coach Scott Borek will add Dan Jewell to the coaching staff, according to The New England Hockey Journal. Jewell will be replacing Curtis Carr, who left the program for Bowling Green last month. According to sources, Jewell’s hire isn’t yet official but is in the works and is close to being completed.
Jewell has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at RPI under Dave Smith, and prior to joining the Engineers had a three-year stint in the USHL with the Bloomington Thunder, serving as an assistant coach as well as assistant general manager and director of player personnel.
Jewell, who was a goaltender for SUNY-Cortland (graduating in 2011), also coached at SUNY-Plattsburgh and Hamilton College; at Plattsburgh, he coached under Bob Emery, who was hired as Merrimack’s director of hockey operations earlier this offseason.
Merrimack’s staff now includes Borek, Josh Ciocco, Jewell and Emery.
Jewell’s hiring marks the first time the Warriors have had a former goaltender on staff as a full-time coach since Mike Doneghey left the program in 2005.
Prior to joining Merrimack, Jewell was set to become the director of hockey operations at Boston University. Instead, Albie O’Connell will hire Eddie Effinger, who has spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at Amherst College, according to The New England Hockey Journal.
