Following a four-point showing in a three-game week, Merrimack freshman forward Sami Tavernier was named Hockey East’s Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Now tied for the team lead in scoring over the last eight games with 10 points (3g, 7a), Tavernier racked up four more last week after he finished with two goals and two helpers. He started his campaign with two helpers in a road win at UMass last Tuesday before scoring a key marker in Merrimack’s come-from-behind win over Maine on Friday night. He scored Merrimack’s first goal again on Saturday again in a 4-4 tie against the Black Bears to cap off a five-point week for the Warriors.
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Tavernier ranks tied for fifth on the team in overall scoring with 15 points (6g, 9a) and is the second-highest-scoring rookie on the squad, while his 92 shots on goal are most on the team, as well.
Tavernier and the rest of the Warriors conclude the regular season with a trip to Burlington to face the University of Vermont starting Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse beginning at 7 p.m.
