Merrimack senior goaltender Craig Pantano was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after making 34 saves on Saturday night, as the Warriors shutout No. 13 Boston University, 4-0, at Lawler Arena.

The shutout was Pantano’s second of the season — he also blanked Lake Superior State — and the third shutout of his career. The shutout against BU on Saturday was the first time the Warriors have shutout a BU team in program history. The series between BU and Merrimack dates back more than 50 years and 100 games.

Of goaltenders who have played at least two games, Pantano is currently ranked fourth in the nation with a .958 save percentage. Pantano’s 1.21 goals-against average is ranked seventh nationally among goalies who have played at least 120 minutes.

Merrimack is 13-16-2 when Pantano has started the last two seasons. In his collegiate career, Pantano has posted a 2.20 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. Right now, that ranks among the best in Merrimack’s Division I era. Recent goaltenders Rasmus Tirronen (2.45/.918), Sam Marotta (2.39/.917), Collin Delia (2.48/.912) and Joe Cannata (2.47/.915) are also among the top of that list.
