Terry Pegula, the benefactor who donated $88 million last year to kick-start Penn State’s move to Division 1 hockey, has bought the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.

Pegula, who is scheduled to host a news conference today, purchased the team for $189 million.

Pegula made his fortune in the natural gas industry.

Adam Wodon at College Hockey News wrote on Monday that the new Penn State arena is ahead of schedule, and a Big Ten Conference could happen as early as 2013.
