Big one this weekend and just one game. Mike do you think they can keep it going? I’m picking a 4-2 win

  17. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:16 pm

KevP – I think winning last week does a lot for confidence. It brings back some attitude and just reminds guys what it felt like to win and score some goals.

  18. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:16 pm

    All of that is good.

Hi mike. What team do you think will get the sixth, seventh, and eighth seeds in hockey east?

  20. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:18 pm

    Hey Tom,

If I had to pick things right now, I think I would go with something like this …

    1 BC
    2 UML
    3 ND
    4 PC
    5 BU
    6 NU
    7 UVM
    8 MC
    9 UNH
    10 UConn
    11 Maine
    12 UMass

  21. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:18 pm

NU is surging, despite Monday. I’m honestly not sure — outside of AIC — that UMass wins another game.

  22. gomackgo

    February 4, 2016 at 9:18 pm

The Hampus, Seney & Tibbet looked good on Sunday. Good mixture of speed, skill and size

  23. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:19 pm

gomackgo – Very much agree. Tibbet also does a nice job going to the net even though he’s a faster guy. Hampus needs to be the net-front presence there.

  24. KevP617

    February 4, 2016 at 9:19 pm

Hampus needs to play like a big player so does LeBlanc

  25. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:20 pm

KevP – Coaches have even said that, when it comes to LeBlanc.

  26. KevP617

    February 4, 2016 at 9:20 pm

    They need to hit people

  27. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:20 pm

I think big guys go through spurts with stuff like that. It’s not necessarily hitting people, but going to the net is definitely part of it, IMO

  28. Western Warrior

    February 4, 2016 at 9:21 pm

Physical play is overrated, I would rather you be skilled

  29. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:22 pm

I wouldn’t say that though, Western. Especially in a rink like Merrimack’s, getting on teams on the forecheck and banging some bodies is a big advantage. It should be part of their identity.

  30. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:22 pm

You need to be skilled as well, but just recruiting “skill” guys is part of what got them into trouble the last few years, IMO. If that skill doesn’t translate, players need to be able to bring something else. Rhett Bly, the scoring didn’t translate to college but he was a hard worker and carved out a role for himself.

  31. KevP617

    February 4, 2016 at 9:22 pm

I loved Bly he was the best

  32. Western Warrior

    February 4, 2016 at 9:23 pm

Okay but a team full of goons isn’t going to win you anything either.

  33. tom

    February 4, 2016 at 9:23 pm

What should we look for from uconn this game?

  34. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:23 pm

Who said anything about a “team full of goons?” I’m talking about playing a physical brand of hockey.

  35. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:24 pm

Tom – The big question is whether or not Rob Nichols will be available for UConn. He’s missed the last few weeks with what we believe is a high ankle sprain.

  36. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:25 pm

Nichols has been very good for UConn since about the middle of November.

  37. gomackgo

    February 4, 2016 at 9:25 pm

Tibbet has the speed to get to the net. Hampus and Seney have the skill to compliment each other. 2 big guys with Seney opens up the ice too

  38. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:25 pm

Tanner Creel has been his replacement and has been nothing more than OK. He has an .889 save percentage and got lit up by Sacred Heart. Steve Thulin, a sophomore, played against Brown on Tuesday and played really well — I think he made 30 saves — in a 3-1 win.

  39. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:25 pm

So if Nichols isn’t back, I’d expect to see Thulin

  40. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:26 pm

gomackgo – I think Tibbet has been really under-valued. Works hard, gets to the net and the speed is there too, obviously.

  41. tom

    February 4, 2016 at 9:26 pm

Is their talent coming up to hockey east levels?

  42. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:26 pm

One note on Thulin – he’s local, from North Reading. He didn’t play last year as a freshman.

  43. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:27 pm

He looked good against Brown, but also allowed five goals against Huntsville in October.

  44. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:27 pm

tom – UConn’s talent absolutely is. They’re just young, but this is a very good recruiting class for them (the current freshmen)

  45. Mike McMahon

    February 4, 2016 at 9:28 pm

3 of their top-4 scorers are freshmen. Max Letunov is a 2nd-round NHL pick and Tage Thompson is a top prospect for this year’s draft.

I think that they can get at least six. If they are a home-ice team, they will need to beat UConn, and then split with Maine and UVM. BC, if you get anything out of that weekend it’s a bonus.
