Corbett's big day leads Merrimack past his former team
The Warriors rolled past Stonehill 48-28 behind 409 yards rushing
Jermaine Corbett ran for 179 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns to lead Merrimack past Stonehill 48-28 on Saturday at Duane Stadium. The Warriors improved to 3-4 on the season (3-2 against FCS teams).
Merrimack led 27-0 at halftime, finding the end zone twice in the first quarter and once in the second (along with a pair of Lliam Davis field goals, which included a 53-yarder).
Stonehill clawed back with a 21-point third quarter, but the Warriors clamped down in the fourth and scored two more touchdowns.
“We're up 27-0 and you try to talk to the kids at halftime telling them that (Stonehill) is going to come back and they're going to keep playing,” Merrimack coach Mike Gennetti told The Eagle Tribune. “Credit to them and obviously they practiced all week too. They came back but I thought offensively, we had so many answers. Those offensive plays didn't bail us out, but helped us close the game out.”
Merrimack’s offensive line was terrific in this game, dominating the line of scrimmage and often getting to the second level, which helped the Warriors gain 409 yards on 51 carries.
On top of Corbett’s day, Brendon Wyatt 102 yards on eight carries and Malakai Anthony returned to the lineup with 51 yards on three carries.
As a team, the Warriors averaged 7.4 yards per carry.
Ayden Pereira started at quarterback for the Warriors. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard strike to Jalen McDonald in the first quarter.
NEXT: The Warriors remain home to face Colgate next Saturday. The Raiders (2-5) lost at home to Georgetown on Saturday, 38-28.
