Baseball: Ninth-Inning Rally Gives Merrimack Sweep of St. A’s

HAVERHILL, Mass. – Down by a run in the bottom of the ninth of game two, the Merrimack College baseball team rallied for two runs – capped off by an RBI single down the left field line from freshman Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass.), as the Warriors pulled off a dramatic doubleheader sweep against Saint Anselm, 16-2 and 9-8, in Sunday’s afternoon Northeast Division battle at Haverhill Stadium in Haverhill, Mass.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Merrimack came out swinging in the first, as the Warriors took an early 3-0 lead heading into the second inning.

After a quick half inning from the Hawks, Merrimack extended its lead to eight after scoring five runs in the bottom of the second. Four of Merrimack’s runs were scored off two Saint Anselm errors while DiSarcina tallied an RBI.

With a runner on first base, Saint Anselm was unable to get a rally going in the third. The Warriors continued were they left off in the second, as the host tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the third.

Saint Anselm continued to struggle at the plate, while Merrimack extended its lead to 15 after scoring two runs in the fourth. After another solid defensive inning by the Warriors, Merrimack drove in their 16th run of the game off an RBI triple from sophomore Sean O’Neill (Norwood, Mass.).

Ahead by a 16-0 margin, Saint Anselm would tack on its first run of the day in the top of the sixth before scoring its last and final run in the ninth.

What Happened (Game 2)

In the nightcap, Saint Anselm grabbed an early 1-0 lead until a RBI single from O’Neill in the bottom of the first, tied the visitors at one.

After two scoreless innings, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three runs in the top of the fourth. Down by three, Merrimack was unable to get any offense going in the fourth, while Saint Anselm managed to score another run.

Trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors came together and brought the score to within three (6-3). After shutting down the Hawks in the seventh, Merrimack continued to battle back, as the Warriors scored its fourth run of the game.

Saint Anselm responded with two runs in the eighth, but Merrimack answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Frank Crinella (Springfield, Mass.) lead off the inning with his third homerun of the season before a RBI triple from DiSarcina allowed two Warriors to cross home.

Heading into the final inning, senior Tyler Cuming (Red Bank, N.J.) was able to shut down the Hawks’ offense and keep them from extending their lead. With no outs, a ground out to shortstop is all what Merrimack needed to tie the game at eight. With two outs and the bases loaded, DiSarcina came through for the Warriors with an RBI single down the left field line to score the winning run and take game two from the Hawks, 9-8.

Merrimack returns to action on Tuesday, April 1, when the Warriors host Northeast Division foe Assumption College at the Warrior Baseball Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
