Women’s Volleyball Edges Southern New Hampshire in Thriller, 3-2

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The Merrimack College women’s volleyball team picked up a thrilling, 3-2, victory on Tuesday night as they downed the Southern New Hampshire Penmen in five sets.

How It Happened

Junior Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) and freshman Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) led their team to a 3-2 victory. Sheehan collected her third double-double of the season with 18 kills and 21 digs, while Cain recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Freshman Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) registered a game high 49 kills to go along with six digs. Junior Taciane Santos (Everett, Mass.) and junior Corrine Gosselin(Lawrence, Mass.) added four blocks a piece.

The Warriors found themselves down 6-4 early in the first set before a kill by Gosselin shifted the Warriors momentum into a 10-0 run and Merrimack took the first set, 25-15. The Navy and Gold dropped the second set to the Penmen, 25-18, but would not be denied a victory.

Merrimack took an early 4-0 run to open the third set and managed to take set the frame, 25-22. The Penmen quickly took the fourth frame, 25-13. The Navy and Gold’s offense never led up and took the final set, 15-11.

  • Merrimack collected 18 blocks.

“We had a great overall team effort today,” said head coach TJ Hajjar. “(Jennifer) Cain came with some huge kills and (Tara) Stuhr played unbelievable for us, keeping the offense in check. I couldn’t be happier with how the girl’s finished the match”

Up Next

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 1st, when they host the Greyhounds from Assumption College. The match begins at approximately 7 p.m. at Hammel Court.
