Women’s Lax: St. A’s Upends Merrimack, 15-6

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Despite a four-point performance from sophomore Aubrie Stouffer(Souderton, Pa.), the Merrimack College women’s lacrosse team fell to Saint Anselm College, 15-6, Saturday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.

How It Happened

The Warriors were led offensively by Stouffer who finished the game with two goals and two assists, while junior Kelly Metzger (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied two goals, two caused turnovers and scooped up three ground balls. Junior Christine Keenan (Byfield, Mass.) and freshman  Meghan Wiseman (Arlington, Mass.) chipped in with a goal each.

Merrimack jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Hawks, as Stouffer tallied her first goal of the game on a free position attempt. However, Saint Anselm responded with a 2-0 run to take a one-point (2-1) lead with 17:58 remaining.

Over the next three minutes, Merrimack rallied back to tie the Hawks, 2-2, after Stouffer found Metzger off a nice cut to the net. Saint Anselm finished the half on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 6-2 lead heading into halftime.

Metzger opened the second half with a quick tally to bring the Warriors to within three (6-3), but a goal from Marissa Daly put the Hawks back up by four (7-3) with 26:52 left to play.

Shortly after, Keenan would find the back of the net to record the Warriors fourth goal of the game on a man-down opportunity. With both teams back to even numbers, the Hawks managed to go on another 2-0 scoring run to bring the score to 9-4.

Midway through the half, Stouffer picked up her second goal of the game after a short pass from freshman Megan Fero (East Manlius, N.Y.). With the clock winding down, Saint Anselm went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 15-5, but a late goal from Wiseman brought the final score to 15-6.

Inside the Numbers

  • Senior goalkeeper Inna Hedden (Woodbine, Md.) finished the game with seven saves while Saint Anselm’s Jane Bunn and Allee Ramzi totaled a combined seven saves.
  • The Hawks were 12-of-13 on clear attempts and 3-oof-7 on free position attempts.
  • Saint Anselm held a slim 12-11 edge in draw controls.
  • The Warriors recorded 17 turnovers while causing five of Saint Anselm’s 12 turnovers.
  • Senior Katie Martin (Lincoln, R.I.) and Metzger scooped up a team-high three ground balls in the loss.

Merrimack returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, when the Warriors travel to Colchester, Vt. to take on Saint Michael’s College. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
