NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman Denia Davis-Stewart (Dorchester, Mass.)of the Merrimack College women’s basketball team made her first-career start and registered her first-ever double-double on Saturday against the Holy Family University Tigers, earning Spalding Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week honors for her effort.
Davis-Stewart finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks on New Year’s Eve, shooting 4-of-7 from the field while making both of her free-throw attempts. Her second-half effort was particularly impressive, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds over 16 minutes in the third and fourth quarters combined.
Saturday marked the second time this season that Davis-Stewart has scored in double figures, tying her previous season high. She pulled down double-digit rebounds for the third occasion this season, while swatting away at least three shots for the seventh time.
The freshman leads the Warriors in both rebounds (7.2) and blocks (2.4) per game, while her block total also puts her in first in the NE10. As a team, Merrimack has accumulated an average of 5.8 blocks per game to lead the conference and rank sixth nationwide.
Davis-Stewart and the rest of the Warriors return to action tomorrow evening when the Navy and Gold host the University of New Haven from Hammel Court. The contest was originally scheduled for an afternoon tip-off, but will now be played at 5:30 p.m.
