The Merrimack women’s basketball program received a commitment from St. Andrew’s forward Ava Owens. The commitment is a notable one, as it’s the first commitment under new head coach Kelly Morrone, who was hired last month.

Owens is a New Hamshire native who moved south to play at the Rhode Island prep school. Owens also plays for the Lady Rivals programs.

“Ava (is) one of the best, versatile athletes around with the ability to influence a game in so many positive ways,” the team said on Twitter while congratulating her on making the commitment.

Prior to St. Andrew’s, Owens was a standout at Bishop Guertin in New Hampshire. She transferred to St. Andrew’s last year and reclassified to the 2021 graduating class.

This season at St. Andrew’s, Owens was named All-State by The Providence Journal and averaged nine points per game while the paper described her as a “defensive wizard, who was a player that could also beat a press by herself.”
