NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After finishing third in its inaugural Division I season, the Merrimack College women’s basketball program was picked to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason poll that was announced Wednesday afternoon during Virtual Media Day.
The number seven ranking is the highest the mark in program history, after being picked to finish last in 2019. Mount St. Mary’s University was selected as the preseason favorite in unanimous fashion, while Sacred Heart University was picked to finish second, followed by Saint Francis University, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island University, and then Wagner College in the sixth slot. The Warriors were represented at Virtual Media Day by new head coach Kelly Morrone and junior guard Kate Mager. Both women discussed the challenges they have faced while being a new coach and athlete during Covid-19. They also talked about the expectations for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Morrone enters her first season at Merrimack after spending the last seven seasons at John Carroll University. With the Blue Streaks, Morrone posted impressive back-to-back 20-win seasons, including a 23-win effort in 2019-20.
Mager comes into her junior season 48 three-pointers away from the Merrimack all-time record in the category. As a sophomore the New City, New York native ranked second on the team in scoring with a 11.6 points per game average. Mager also led the NEC in three-pointers made with 76.
