After leading her team at a weekend tournament for the third straight time in the spring season, freshman Jessica Wagner (San Diego, Calif.) of the Merrimack College women’s golf team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Golfer and Rookie of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Earning her second weekly honor from the league this season, Wagner, who has led the Warriors in the three tournaments since the spring season began about a month ago, fired a 78 on Saturday before shaving two strokes off her total on Sunday, finishing with a two-round total of 154. That mark stood as the sixth-best in the tournament.
Wagner has now lowered her season average to 79.7 strokes per round, which is the lowest average on the team. She is the only player to average a score in the 70s per round, and six of her seven rounds played this spring have been carded in the 70s.
The Warriors hit the links again on Thursday, opening the three-day Northeast-10 Championships, held at Stonebridge Country Club in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Merrimack will be gunning for its first-ever league championship as the NE-10 is in its first season sponsoring women’s golf.
