After scoring four goals across two games, including the first hat trick in program history in the first win of the season, Merrimack sophomore Katelyn Rae (Courtice, Ontario) has been named the Warrior Hockey East Player of the Week.
Rae becomes the first player in the program’s short history to garner Player of the Week recognition, earning the award in the opening week of the team’s sophomore season. She was named Hockey East Rookie of the Month for January during her freshman campaign.
As she did in the program-opening game last season, Rae scored the first goal of the year for the Warriors in the season-opener this past Friday at St. Cloud State, netting a power play tally in an eventual 4-2 loss to the Huskies to begin 2016-17.
The sophomore would follow that up the very next day with the first hat trick in program history, putting away three goals including another power play score to lead the Warriors to a 4-1 victory and a season-opening series split with St. Cloud State. Rae comes out of the weekend alone at the top in Hockey East with four goals, while that total is also tied for first in the nation with three others.
Rae and the Warriors continue their season-opening road trip this weekend when they travel to Colgate for two games with the Raiders. Friday’s puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m., while Saturday’s game will get underway at noon.
