Moments: Homecoming, A Campus United

After taking on some of the nation’s best against Boston College to open up the season at Lawler, the women’s ice hockey team welcomed in Rensselaer for the team’s first contests against the ECAC Hockey squad.

Supported by graduates from the Class of 2019– the team’s first crop of players to cross the stage at graduation– the game opened up with a goal from a newcomer in freshman Sam Lessick to give Merrimack a 1-0 lead. Lessick was the first of six players to score their first goals in the 2019-20 season.

First years continued to make their impact as Katie Kaufman worked on a give-and-go with senior captain Mikyla Grant-Mentis, who would cash in on her first goal of a record-setting season. After 40 minutes, the Warriors headed back into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

In the final period, the team tacked on a third goal from Gabby Jones, scoring her second of the year. Jones’ goal provided ample support for goaltender Lea-Kristine Demers, as the senior backstopped 16 shots for her first shutout on the year. Defense also played a big role in keeping shots to the outside, with 13 blocks in the contest.
