Senior Samantha Ridgewell and junior Mikyla Grant-Mentis of the Merrimack College women’s ice hockey program have both earned weekly honors from the Women’s Hockey East Association after outstanding performances in their first weekend of the 2018-2019 season.
In week one of the new season, Mikyla Grant-Mentis was honored as the Women’s Hockey East Association player of the week, with a great showing in two games against Union College. Grant-Mentis posted a goal Friday night just three minutes into the first period, and followed up Friday’s win with a two-goal performance Saturday afternoon against the Dutchmen. The Brampton, Ontario, native currently holds a 4, which is good for second on the team; her three points puts her in a tie for second in the conference.
Samantha Ridgewell, the Women’s Hockey East Association goaltender of the week, followed her teammate’s performance with exceptional play between the pipes for the Warriors. With her third career shutout Friday night to open the season, her 52 saves over the weekend boasts a .981 save percentage. Adding to that, Ridgewell’s .50 goals-per-game average leads the WHEA, as she gave up just one goal in Saturday’s 4-1 victory.
The Warriors look to take its momentum from opening weekend into its first road trip of the season, as they travel to Penn State for two games this weekend. Puck drop for Friday, October 5, is slated for 6 p.m., and Saturday, October 6, at 2 p.m.
