Women’s Ice Hockey Toppled by UConn

STORRS, Conn. – The Merrimack Warriors women’s ice hockey team took the game’s first lead, but quickly unraveled against the University of Connecticut Huskies, losing 6-1 on Friday night at Freitas Ice Forum in Connecticut.

How It Happened

  • Merrimack took the game’s first lead, as Mikyla Grant-Mentis handled a pass across the zone by Gabby Jones as Grant-Mentis sat unmarked in the faceoff circle. The senior captain, unimpeded, took a crisp shot for her 20th of the season and a 1-0 Warrior lead.
  • UConn tied the game on the power play six minutes later, as Savannah Bouzide took the puck in through the defense in the neutral zone, scoring to tie the game.
  • The Huskies added two in the second, as Jessie Aney scored on a breakaway at 6:35, before Danielle Fox took a head of steam down the ice and cut across the net to make it 3-1 for the home team.
  • UConn would sprint to the finish, adding three in the third period. At the open of the period, Natalie Snodgrass scored shorthanded, drawing a penalty to double down her effort. On the ensuing advantage, Catherine Crawley would tally to make it 5-1 for the Huskies.
  • The hosts would close out the night as Snodgrass added her second, getting a deflection out from in front of a long shot from the point for the 6-1 final.

Notes & Numbers

  • Freshman forward Allison Reeb earned her first career point with an assist on Grant-Mentis’ goal in the first period.
  • Grant-Mentis and Jones are now holding two game point scoring streaks, each holding a goal and assist in the last two contests.
