How It Happened
The Warriors salvaged one point in a 1-1 tie against the Hawks.
Merrimack came out firing, taking the pace of play to St. Anselm over the first ten minutes. The Navy and Gold were rewarded with a goal as off a punt from Meghan Gulbrandsen (Haverhill, Mass.), the Warriors attack started in motion. Junior Jenna Savi (Dedham, Mass.) placed a perfect ball into space, allowing Bianca Giacalone (Gloucester, Mass.) to run onto to it, striking the ball into the back of the net.
St. Anselm got back into the match in the 28th minute as Kendra Bonczar scored her first of the season from 15 yards in front of Gulbrandsen to tie the game.
The final 65 minutes of the contest were evenly played, as neither defense allowed a game-winning goal.
The Navy and Gold nearly capitalized in the 99th minute as Sarah Coakley (Medway, Mass.) put a header off the post. The rebound came to Giacalone, but she headed the ball over the crossbar.
Freshman Molly Meehan (Fairfield, Conn.) played in the second-half and through overtime, notching three saves.
Additionally, in the first overtime senior Katie Bresciani (Hopedale, Mass.) cleared the ball off the line as the Hawks nearly scored off a corner kick.
