Merrimack Swimming Well-Balanced at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Merrimack College women’s swimming team totaled three first-place finishes in a dual meet against Brandeis University on Tuesday afternoon in Waltham, Massachusetts. Nine swimmers for the Warriors saw action in the meet, with the squad posting six top-two finishes during the course of the day.

How It Happened
Freshman Maeve McGowan (Mansfield, Mass.) continues to perform sensationally in the backstroke events, as she placed first overall in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.82) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.95). The Mansfield, Massachusetts, native competed in the 100-yard butterfly for the first time in her career, as she posted a time of 1:12.26.

Freshman Samantha Towle (Chalfont, Pa.) finished first overall in the 100-yard freestyle (57.66), and second overall in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:43.42) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.81).

Sophomore Ireland Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) tallied a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:19.59. The Niantic, Connecticut, native also tallied a career-best time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:53.99), while posting times of 29.79 in the 50-yard freestyle and 1:03.87 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Junior Coral Robinson (Methuen, Mass.) competed in the 200-yard freestyle (2:48.29) for the first time in her career. The Methuen, Massachusetts, native also competed in the 50-yard freestyle (35.98). Junior Sydney Frerichs (Andover, Mass.) competed in a trio of individual events, which included the 200-yard backstroke (career-best time of 2:45.69), the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.77) and the 50-yard freestyle (32.08).

Senior captain Erin Lydon (Waltham, Mass.) posted times of 2:23.19 in the 200-yard freestyle, 30.80 in the 50-yard freestyle and 6:31.29 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Julia Collins (North Reading, Mass.)performed in a pair of individual events, as she posted times of 1:24.68 in the 100-yard backstroke and 31.14 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Sophomore captain Kendra Van Pelt (Burlington, Iowa) finished third overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.96. Sophomore Alana Appel (Salt Lake City, Utah) competed in two individual events, as she tallied times of 6:24.40 in the 500-yard freestyle and 1:09.45 in the 100-yard freestyle.

The Warriors ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams competed in the 200-yard medley relay. McGowan, Wilson, Lydon and Van Pelt competed with the ‘A’ team, as the group posted a time of 2:09.20. Collins, Appel, Frerichs and Robinson competed with the ‘B’ team, as the lineup posted a time of 2:28.28. Van Pelt, Appel, Lydon and Towle formed the Warriors’ lineup in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the girls posting a time of 2:00.50.
