Merrimack Women’s Tennis Falls Short at Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – The Merrimack College women’s tennis team lost for the first time in 2016, dropping a 7-2 decision to the Stonehill Skyhawks on Tuesday afternoon at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts.

How It Happened (Doubles)

  • No. 1 – Senior Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario)held on to salvage the final doubles match, 8-6. The duo led by a 7-4 margin, but saw the Skyhawks pull within a point of tying the match before winning the 14th and final game
  • No. 2 – Juniors Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) and Mackenzie Blair (Thomaston, Conn.) fell by an 8-3 final at the second flight
  • No. 3 – Losing for the first time as a pairing, sophomore Lauren Persson (Barnstable, Mass.) and freshman Mia Briggs (York, Maine) stumbled at third doubles, 8-3

How It Happened (Singles)

  • No. 1 – Messina picked up Merrimack’s lone victory during singles play. She prevailed in the opening set, needing only seven games (6-1) to dispatch Victoria Barbetta. In the second frame, the reigning NE-10 Player of the Week trailed 6-5, but rebounded to win the final two games and take the match
  • No. 2 – Seifaei’s season record fell to 2-2 at second singles with a two-set loss to Stonehill
  • No. 3 – Persson lost for the first time this season at third singles to Carolina Alvarez
  • No. 4 – Dunn’s match finished first, with the third-year player winning two games in the opening frame before faltering in straight sets
  • No. 5 – Blair competed at fifth singles for the third time in four matches, losing for the first time this year in straight sets (6-3, 6-0)
  • No. 6 – Briggs featured an opposite result as Blair, battling back after being blanked in her first set to win three games in the second, but eventually lost by a 6-3 final
