RINDGE, N.H. – Under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Roberts, the Merrimack College women’s tennis team opened the 2016 season in style with a 9-0 victory over Franklin Pierce up in Rindge, N.H. The win marked the first of Roberts’ collegiate coaching career, while also improving Merrimack to 1-0 in Northeast-10 Conference play

How It Happened (Doubles)

  • Paired together like they ended last season, senior Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario) debuted at first doubles. They picked up their first win of the year, 8-2
  • Juniors Mackenzie Blair (Thomaston, Conn.) and Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Conn.) played at second doubles in the Warriors’ first match. The duo, having played together consistently over the past two years, won by the same 8-2 margin
  • Freshmen Mia Briggs (York, Maine) and Roberta Marcos (Monterrey, Mexico) played in the first career match at third doubles and delivered their first career doubles win, 8-3

How It Happened (Singles)

  • No. 1 – Messina, who ended the 2015-16 campaign ranked No. 48 nationally, returned to her first singles spot against the Ravens. She triumphed in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1
  • No. 2 – Seifaei, who played on the second flight last spring, won by identical set scores as Messina (6-0, 6-1)
  • No. 3 – Sophomore Lauren Persson (Barnstable, Mass.) made her season debut in victorious fashion, doing so without dropping a game in straight sets (6-0, 6-0)
  • No. 4 – Blair totted out a No. 4, battling to a 6-4 win in the opening set before prevailing by a 6-2 final in the second frame
  • No. 5 – Dunn matched Persson with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles
  • No. 6 – At the final flight, Briggs played in her first-ever singles match and notched her first collegiate win, 6-1 and 6-2
