Continuing her undefeated run through the Northeast-10 Conference, senior captain Grace Messina (Caracas, Venzuela) of the Merrimack College women’s tennis team was named the NE-10 Player of the Week following a 4-0 week that saw Warriors improve their record to 7-1 on the year.
Messina won both of her singles matches and both doubles contests, dispatching opponents from Saint Anselm and American International. The second-year captain is now a combined 16-0 on the season between singles and doubles action.
To begin the week, Messina won a three-set match over the Hawks’ Jess Perkins. The Venezuelan won the opener before battling to a 10-6 win in the finale. Against the top-flight option from the Yellow Jackets, Messina triumphed by a 6-1, 6-2 final. She now has won all 44 of her NE-10 singles matches to date, entering the season as the No. 48 ranked player nationally.
The three-time NE-10 Player of the Year also improved her doubles mark to 8-0 following a pair of victories. Partnering with sophomore Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario), the Navy and Gold’s top option doubled up Saint Anselm, 8-4, before an 8-3 win over AIC.
Messina and the Warriors return to North Andover High School on Wednesday afternoon, when Merrimack battles Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m.
