WTEN: Merrimack Picked Third in NE-10 Coaches Poll

After coming one game short of winning a second straight Northeast-10 Championship in 2014, the Merrimack College women’s tennis team ranked third in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league offices Wednesday morning.

The Stonehill Skyhawks, the defending NE-10 Champions, arrived in first in the preseason prognostications. Stonehill received 155 points and five of a possible 13 first-place votes. Adelphi, winners of the regular-season title last year, came in second place with 129 points and two first-place tallies.

The Navy and Gold (122), led by second-year head coach Aaron Bergeron, slotted right behind the Panthers and collected two votes for the top spot. Merrimack defeated Adelphi in upset fashion, 5-4, last year in the NE-10 Semifinals. The Panthers entered that contest undefeated on the year in conference play.

Southern New Hampshire (114) and Bentley (94) round out the first five teams in the poll. The Falcons, who finished eighth in the conference last year, took home the final first-place vote. Assumption earned 56 points to land in sixth in the poll. The top-six finishers in the conference advance to the NE-10 Championship.

Le Moyne (77), Saint Michael’s (74) and Saint Anselm (56) account for No. 7-9 in the rankings. New Haven (51) was selected to finish 10th by the league’s coaches, while Saint Rose (31), Franklin Pierce (29) and American International (22) secured the final three spots in the preseason rankings.

The Warriors begin the 2015 campaign with a road matchup at Saint Rose on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. Merrimack opens up its home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Navy and Gold host Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
