After finishing 4-0 over two matches over the weekend, junior Grace Messina(Caracas, Venezuela) and freshman Celine Mende (Shrewsbury, Mass.) were honored by the Northeast-10 Conference on Wednesday morning. Messina collected Player of the Week honors while Mende received the Co-Rookie of the Week nod after two strong performances in her first career matches.

The Warriors opened the season by defeating Saint Rose, 9-0, to being conference play with a victory. Merrimack followed that up with an 8-1 win over non-conference foe Colby-Sawyer on Sunday afternoon.

Messina began the season with two triumphs at No. 1 doubles, playing with partner Chealsey Giatrelis(Centerville, Mass.). The duo is now 14-1 together dating back to last season and 8-0 in conference play. Messina, the two-time Player of the Year in the NE-10, won both of her singles matches in straight sets. With her victory on Saturday, she now owns a 25-match singles winning streak during conference play and has yet to lose an NE-10 singles match.

Mende began her career with an impressive debut, sharing the weekly award with Stonehill’s Nicole Downey. She paired with partner Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario) to win both of their matches at No. 3 doubles. During singles play, the Shrewsbury native did not lose a set and won her first three career sets without losing a game.

The Navy and Gold begin a three-match week on Wednesday after by playing in their home opener against Franklin Pierce from North Andover High School at 3 p.m.
