Behind precision shooting, Penn drops Merrimack in Cathedral Classic opener
Penn 77, Merrimack 65
Behind its most efficient shooting performance of the season, Penn pulled away from Merrimack for a 77-65 victory in the Warriors’ opening game at The Cathedral Classic.
The Quakers were lethal offensively, shooting 53.4 percent from the field and an eye-popping 60.9 percent inside the arc — both season bests. Freshman Dalton Scantlebury was the star of the night, pouring in 22 points while going a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor.
Merrimack countered with a balanced effort, led by Kevair Kennedy, who finished with 18 points. Andres Marrero added 14, and Ernest Shelton chipped in 12 for the Warriors.
KC Ugweuakazi made his presence felt on the glass, collecting nine rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.
With the win, Penn moved to 4-2, while the Warriors slipped to 2-5.
Merrimack will be back on the floor Saturday at 2 p.m. against Hofstra. The Pride opened their weekend with a 63-58 win over La Salle on Friday, paced by 22 points from Cruz Davis.
