Derkack played with a fractured foot and torn ligaments, aiming for a Power 5 school in the transfer portal
Discovered on an MRI after last week's NEC Championship game, Jordan Derkack played the NEC semifinal and final with a fractured foot and two torn ligaments.
Derkack told The Eagle Tribune's Bill Burt that the injury will not require surgery.
“I didn’t know exactly what the injury was, but I knew it wasn’t good,” said Derkack. “But I had to play for my team and my coaches. They are family to me. Thankfully, I don’t need surgery, just rest.”
Derkack entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. He said he's looking for a spot at a Power 5 school, which will give him a better opportunity to play in the NBA.
"Coach Gallo understood and supported our decision," he said.
“Basically, if there is a better situation where that can happen and there is a fit for me, which is very important, I would consider it,” said Derkack.
He is leaving the door open for a return to Merrimack is things don’t align like they did when he chose Merrimack and Joey Gallo three years ago.
“I love Merrimack, my coaches, my teammates and I credit Coach Gallo for creating a special atmosphere here, that I believe isn’t normal at most schools,” said Derkack.
Derkack said he hopes to have a decision made by May 1.
“With or without me, I expect Merrimack to continue what’s been started in the MAAC (Metro Athletic Association Conference) next year,” said Derkack. “Coach Gallo is a special person. He’s the kind of guy who invites you to have dinner with his family any time. and you can walk into his office during the day and just sit down and talk hoops for an hour.
“Merrimack is a great place and the best is yet to come. I guarantee it.”
