Greg Classen's number retired by Nipawin Hawks
Former Merrimack forward Greg Classen had his number retired by the Nipawin Hawks, his junior team, over the weekend.
Classen scored 73 goals and 125 assists for 198 points in 223 regular-season games with the Hawks. He also played two seasons at Merrimack (1998-00), scoring 28 goals and 27 assists for 55 points in 72 games. Classen was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team in 1998-99.
At the end of his sophomore season, he signed with the Nashville Predators and appeared in 90 NHL games. Classen’s career then took him to Europe, where he played until 2019.
“I am so grateful to have my number retired by the Hawks, growing up down the road in Aylsham, it was a dream come true to wear the black and gold inside the Cage. To have my parents Gord and Marj, sister Lori and other family in the stands, and then my brother Bryce and cousin Cris along for the ride as teammates was truly special,” Classen said in a press release.
Classen was inducted into the SJHL Hall of Fame in 2019.
